Welcome Back!
Drawing Foundations
For the first week and a half of school we will be focusing on basic, foundational drawing skills. We will begin by recreating/drawing abstract forms that will grow in complexity as the week goes on. We will conclude our foundational drawing activities by recreating an image by Pablo Picasso. The kicker is that students must complete the drawing upside-down! Doing this helps us to focus on basic shapes and forms rather than nameable parts and objects. Students will be asked to consider the following: Draw light to dark Begin with large shapes then move to details Use an eraser often! (you're not learning to draw if you don't erase) Find reference points to plot shapes Student Examples from 3rd period:

Charcoal Rope Drawing
Last week students completed a rope drawing done in charcoal to continue their exploration of value and form. For this piece students were asked to consider identifying the highlights of the form rather than the shadows.

IPad Self-Portraits
We spent two weeks using the iPads to create self-portraits. Students were asked to find the contours of their face and an extra challenge was to incorporate mapping of the shadows and highlights. Students have been extremely please with their results!

Paper Cutting
In art we looked at the fascinating world of contemporary paper cutting. Students were asked to create a symmetrical design for their worked and completed their projects by spray painting piece and mounting it on colored paper. Enjoy the TedTalks at right that we viewed and discussed in class on contemporary paper cutting artists, Beatrice Coron.

Chiaroscuro African Masks
In 5th/6th period we have just completed our large scale African Mask Drawings. Each day we learned about a new people group in Africa and discussed the historical and contemporary significance of masks in these cultures. In regards to process, students used the classical chiaroscuro technique developed during the Italian Renaissance in which the understanding of light and form is emphasized.
