Julie Mehretu: "Place"
maps.google.com
In class we are using google maps to locate places of interest and print our images to use as a springboard for an upcoming project. Students have located various places of personal significance and have printed an aerial view and a street view to be used in exploring the idea of "Place". We will look at contemporary artist, Julie Mehretu as inspiration for our work. |

Printmaking Using Approporaited Images
We are finally using our printing press that was gifted to us by the Student Art Fund (SAF). We are currently doing drypoint etchings on poleax glass using 'appropriated' images. We looked at artists such as Barbara Kruger, Marcel Duchamp, and Andy Warhol who used appropriation in their work. In addition, we looked at the work of Shepard Fairey and used the controversy over his Obama Hope campaign poster to discuss copyright issues in appropriating images.
To the right is an images we watched in class that helps give a working definition of appropriation in art. |

What's in a Bag?Students completed their acrylic painting projects in which they were asked to bring projects from home to utilize in a photo reference. We were inspired by the work of Kristy Miliken in this precept. In choosing our objects and composition we explored the them of 'identity' through the representation of these objects.

Family Photo
In lieu of the Grandparent Portrait project completed every other year for the Student Art Fund show, we have completed a charcoal drawing using a family photo as a starting point. Students built upon their skills from 7th grade using the chiaroscuro technique developed during the Italian Renaissance.
