African Masks: ChiaroscuroWe are using the final three weeks of school to complete drawings of African masks using the technique of chiaroscuro. This technique focuses on identifying the highlights and shadows of the piece and is typically completed on a toned piece of paper. To complete this project we are using black and white charcoal pencils along with black and white charcoal sticks.

Paper CuttingWe have been looking at the tradition of paper cutting that can be traced back to 600 CE in China with the invention of paper, and eventually, the paper cut. Time in class has been spent looking at contemporary artists who have used this technique in their work such as Beatrice Coron. Students have been working on their own asymmetrical and symmetrical designs and have been focusing on cutting out the negative spaces of their images.

Cubism: Mixed Media CollageThis week student are completing their cubist mixed media portraits. In class we have been learning about the work of Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Georges Braque as an impetus for our work. The goal is to create an original work of art while incorporating the general recurring images found in Cubist works.

ColorfieldStudents have completed two works based off of the Colorfield art movement using watercolor. In their work, students explore with abstract shapes and specific colors to evoke and poetry basic human emotions that Colorfield artists such as Mark Rothko and Helen Frankenthaler are interested in.

Australian Indigenous ArtCurrently, in the year long class, students are learning about Australian indigenous art and will begin next week creating a project based on this form of art. Students will learn various symbols traditionally used and will incorporate them into their piece. To conclude their work students will write a narrative based on the symbols they chose to use in their piece.

IPad "Sketchbook Express" No Place for Hate Poster DesignStudents are working with the iPads to create a poster design based off the themes "No Name Calling" and "All of Us Together, Building a Better Community". We will be entering these posters into a contest sponsored by Montecito Bank and Trust put on by the 'Anti-Defamation League' (ADL).

iPad "Sketchbook Express"Students are using the iPad application "sketchbook express" to create a practice image before beginning the self-portrait project. Students are looking at the contours of the object along with mapping highlights and shadows found in each object.

surrealismIn class we are learning about the surrealist art movement. We have been discussing the lives and works of artists like Magritte, Dali, and de Chirico. Based off our knowledge of the art movement we will be creating surrealist collages in which we will employ at least two surrealist devices in our works. Below is a short film students watched that was a collaboration between Disney and Dali that began in 1946 and was completed in 2003.

dia de los muertosThis week we are finishing our radial skull designs for Dia de los Muertos. Several students' work will be chosen to put up for an altar at Casa de la Raza for the event on November 2nd from 5:00pm-11:00pm. Be sure to stop by for this community event to see what students at SBJH created!

Animal TextureThis week students are finishing their animal texture projects. Students have been working from a reference photo to complete their work. In order to create their work students are using reference points to plot out their image and practicing using a range of values to create believable forms in their work.

Right Brain and Left Brain
This week we will be learning about how the right and left brain function. We will learn to increase our perceptual skills this week by completing an upside down drawing that encourages conscious right mode thinking.

This week in class we will be covering basic classroom expectations and procedures in order for students to be successful in their art courses. Students will take home a syllabus and the letter to guardians. All syllabi will need to be signed by both the student and guardian and the attached page turned in no later than FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 5.
