Student Art Fund Grandparent Portrait ShowThe 2015 Grandparent Portrait Show is the fourth in a series of bi-annual exhibitions of secondary school student artwork to communities of the greater Santa Barbara area served by the Student Art Fund. The works pay tribute to the artists’ grandparents or other significant elders in a variety of media, including drawings, paintings, sculptures, photographs, and assemblage.

"Man v. Nature"Students are exploring the theme "Man v. Nature" in their work currently. Students are asked to consider the ways in which nature and man are in opposition to one another and the ways in which they work together. Incorporated in each image is a man-made object juxtaposed with a natural object(s).

1. Focus on texture 2. Create a 3-dimensional element 3. Only use scissors/x-acto 4. combine 3 photographs to make 1 5. Use at least 3 different materials 6. Focus on color 7. Incorporate a word/text 8. Use a small piece from someone else's photo |
The Readymade and AssemblageIn class we are learning about the readymade and assemblage looking at artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Louise Nevelson, and Jasper Johns. Students have been discussing and debating a fundamental question in the context of these artists; "What is art?". In regards to art making, students are using Louise Nevelson's assemblages as a starting point for their work. Students are asked to bring in 'junk' from their place of residence to incorporate into their work.

word Associaitons: Collaborative ActivityWe began this one day activity by creating imagery based off of one word written on a piece of paper. After 10 minutes students passed their paper to the right and continued to build off of the imagery and word. Students used a combination of charcoal pencil and pen to create the images.

creative "unblock" projectsAs a part of our creative exploration we are working on creative unblock projects taken from the artists featured in the book "Creatuve Block: Get Unstuck Discover New Ideas" by blogger Danielle Krysa.
Creative Unblock Project #10 by Rachel Denny "Go outside and take a walk. Listen to and look at your surroundings. Find a natural object that you find interesting and take it home. Try to replicate the object in an unnatural way. ...Use your imagination, and don't be afraid of failure. You can't do it wrong." |
Creative Unblock Project #30 by Kate Pugsley
"...Start with a stack of of white or off-white papers. Sometimes I use scraps , or sometimes I take large pieces of drawing paper and cut them...then get out your water colors, acrylics, or other paint and mix up some of your favorite colors. Paint the surface of the papers...once the painted papers have dried, get some scissors or an x-acto knife and cut out some shapes...get a blank sheet of paper and start arranging shapes. Just play with the shapes and colors, layering until you see interesting combinations." |
Project "Place" : Julie MehretuStudents are finishing their projects this week based off the contemporary artist Julie Mehretu. Students were asked to use the layering and architectural structures found in Mehretu's work as inspiration for their projects. Before beginning the project students watched the PBS Art 21 video on Mehretu and discussed the contemporary questions and issues surrounding her work. |
Collaborative drawing
Today we took part in a collaborative drawing. Students we asked to work with a partner and set up a still life to draw from. The tricky part about the activity was that students were told they must completer the entire drawing with their wrists toed together. Because of this tension with the push and pull the images have an energetic line quality.
